FBLA Students Rank 1st at National Competition

Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, July 5, 2017– 3 members (Caitlin Grass, Dylan Burr and Morgan Uzzell) along with their Advisor Dr. Gary Smith of the Missouri Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda Chapter from Ste. Genevieve High School recently traveled to Anaheim, California for the FBLA-PBL National Leadership Conference (NLC) where they won 1st place in Website Design.  The NLC is the pinnacle of the year, with over 15,000 attendees and 140 competitive events.  Attending students had to qualify after competing at the State Leadership Conference in Springfield, Missouri in April.

This year’s NLC brought the magic of Disney to life through exciting keynote presentations, tours of businesses like the Hilton Anaheim and Anaheim Angels Stadium, and workshops from KPMG, TRI Leadership, and more.  Some of the highlights of the California trip were going to Huntington Beach, an Angels’ game (they won!!!), Downtown Disney, Bubba Gump Shrimp and Disneyland.

Favorite Memory: “Dr. Smith treating us to Dinner and Dessert at the Cheesecake Factory after winning 1st place.”

Favorite Memory: “Flying for the first time and it was terrifying, but I could not have had better people to go on the journey with.”

Favorite Memory: “Getting to hear my name and my teammates’ names as they announced the first place winners of the website design competition.  At first, just getting to go on stage was crazy enough, but then, to hear our names announced for the first place was insane.  It is something I hope to never forget.”

Student competitive events have topics ranging from Accounting to Marketing, Personal Finance to Website Development.  All competitive events are aligned to the standards taught in Missouri classrooms, allowing for an intra-curricular experience to showcase skills taught.  Missouri FBLA brought home 36 Top 10 finishes, and Missouri Phi Beta Lambda brought home 37 awards.

Caitlin Grass said, “It was very much a shock we were just excited to be able to go on stage and receive a medal…  I am still in shock, but we just got 1st in the nation!!!!!”

Morgan Uzzell said, “What?!? Well, Thank God!!!”

Dylan Burr said, “Back at the end of the first semester, Morgan and I promised Dr. Smith we would win FBLA Nationals if he let us use our website as our final project for his Website Design class. It was certainly far-fetched at that point, and it was closer to simply being a joke. Then when we won state, our goal was still very far out of reach, but it started to seem more obtainable. Then we were feeling good after our first presentation at nationals to find out we made finals the next morning. We got asked some difficult questions in our finals presentation, which seemed to indicate we were in the top tier, and this proved to be true the next day. We simply hoped to get on stage at the awards ceremony the next night, and I was truly crying from joy when our names were announced. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget.”

Ste. Genevieve High School brought home the first place award in Website Design.  It is believed; this is the first time Ste. Genevieve Future Business Leaders of America have taken first place at Nationals.  Missouri FBLA-PBL also brought home numerous awards, including the largest state chapter in the North Central Region and 2nd largest state chapter in the nation.

Missouri FBLA-PBL, a chartered member of National FBLA-PBL, is a registered 501(c) 3.  Their mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.  Missouri FBLA-PBL membership exceeds 15,500, making it the second largest state chapter of the organization in the nation and the second largest career and technical student organization in Missouri.
