Robert Leo “Bob” Bauman, Class of 1951

IMG_0511Mr. Bauman was a three sport athlete in high school and was named “Best Athlete” his senior year. He was a member of the first Ste. Genevieve American Legion Post #150 baseball team in 1947. After graduation for Ste. Genevieve High School, Mr. Bauman accepted an athletic scholarship to play football at the University of Missouri, where he lettered three years in varsity football. As a junior in 1953, he led the Tigers in rushing as a fullback and was named to the Big 7 All Conference Football Team. As a senior, he was also named Big 7 All Conference at the fullback position, as well as receiving Honorable Mention All American recognition in 1954.  After completing his senior year in football, he joined the University of Missouri baseball team as a pitcher on the NCAA National Championship that won the 1954 College World Series. In 1994, the 1954 University of Missouri Baseball Team, including Mr. Bauman, was inducted into University of Missouri Hall of Fame. At the induction ceremony, when Mr. Bauman was greeted by legendary football coach Don Faurot, Coach Faurot exclaimed “Bob Bauman, the best blocking fullback I have ever seen”. After graduating from the University of Missouri, Mr. Bauman joined the United States Army, and was selected to play on the Army’s travelling football and baseball teams. Upon returning to civilian life in Ste. Genevieve, he became an insurance agent with Lakenan Insurance Company with a special interest in “Crop and Farm Insurance” for county farmers that saved many area farmers from financial ruins. Mr. Bauman was very active in the community as well, serving as a youth baseball and basketball coach for many years. He was active in the Future Farmers of America, the Ste. Genevieve Elks, the American Legion Post #150, the 4 H Club, and was a volunteer at area nursing homes. He was an avid conservationist and outdoorsman. He was married to Carol Childers Bauman and they had four children: Stephanie, Brian, Erich, and Robert “Bob”, Jr.
