Mike Carroll, Class of 1966

IMG_0506Mike Carroll attended all twelve years of his elementary and high school education in the Ste. Genevieve R-II School District. Mike excelled as an athlete in high school, earning nine varsity letters in football, basketball, and track. He earned three state medals in shot and discus, and was the school record holder in both events for many years. He received the Athlete of the Year Award his senior year.

After graduating high school, Mike received an athletic scholarship in football to the University of Missouri, where he developed into an outstanding offensive lineman and team leader. He was a member of the 1968 Gator Bowl team, and the 1970 Orange Bowl team, when the Tigers were Big Eight Conference Co-Champions and ranked No. 6 in the nation in the college polls. He was selected to play in the 1970 Senior Bowl as one of the nation’s outstanding offensive lineman. Mr. Carroll capped off his senior year by being named to college football’s All American Team as an offensive guard. In addition, Mike excelled academically and was selected to the University of Missouri’s oldest honor society, QEBH, which honors students who have displayed outstanding character, leadership, and academic achievement.

Following his senior year of college, Mike Carroll was selected in the 6th round of the NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He decided to pursue a coaching opportunity at the University of Missouri as an offensive line coach for one year before joining the Minnesota Vikings team camp in 1971. While attending preseason camp with the Vikings, he suffered an injury and was later released, thus ending his football career.

Decades after graduating from the University of Missouri, Mr. Carroll continued to receive honors from his playing days. In 2001, he was inducted into the University of Missouri Football Hall of Fame. In 2011, he was bestowed the prestigious honor of being chosen to the University of Missouri All Homecoming Team, honoring the greatest football players from the University of Missouri from the past 100 years. Mike Carroll’s high school jersey number “74” was long ago retired at Ste. Genevieve High School. Mr. Carroll is one of only three persons to have the honor of having his number retired at Ste. Genevieve High School.

Mr. Carroll has had a very successful business career, beginning in 1976 with Inland River Transportation Company near Houston, Texas, where he has held various management positions in operations and finance, and has worked on some of the deepest oil drilling and production platform installations in the Gulf of Mexico. Mr. Carroll is Vice-President and Director of Inland River Transportation Company.

Mike Carroll is active in his community of Fulshear, Texas, as a volunteer in youth football and his church. He is a sponsor of the Special Olympics, the Shriner’s Children’s Association, the Houston Police Officers Association, and the Texas Highway Patrol. In 2001, he served as director of college football’s Houston Bowl.

Mike Carroll is the son of the late Jim and Maxine Carroll. He is married to his high school sweetheart, SGHS graduate Mickey Limbaugh. Together, they have four children: Michael, Daniel, James, and Katie.
