Thanks to a donation by the PTO, Ste. Genevieve Elementary now has a Share Fridge available in the cafeteria, located at the end of the serving line. A Share Fridge offers students a place to donate any sealed items they do not eat or drink during their lunch. Then, students in any grade at Ste. Genevieve Elementary can stop by the Share Fridge to pick up any of these items at any time of day. There is no purchase necessary. Each Ste. Genevieve R-II cafeteria has a Share Table for items that do not need to be refrigerated.
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education promotes the use of Share Fridges and Share Tables in an effort to reduce the amount of wasted food and provide additional helpings to other students at no extra cost. “The students have jumped right into taking advantage of this resource,” Director of Food Service Jordon Mueller said. “Not only are students able to pick up another item if they would like, but it has also decreased the amount of milk and other items that we throw away.”
