SGHS Varsity Scholar Bowl Wins MAAA Conference Championship

Congratulations to the Varsity Scholar Bowl Team for winning the MAAA Conference Championship this past Saturday! In order to win the title, the team picked up wins over Kingston, Farmington, Valley of Caledonia, and North County. After losing to Valley of Caledonia twice in regular season play, the SG Varsity Scholar Bowl team knocked Valley out of the semifinals, then defeated North County to clinch the MAAA Scholar Bowl Conference Championship.

The Conference Tournament roster included Peyton Bequette, Thomas Elder, Kaylee Forhan as Captain, Maria Kemper, Lucas Meier, and Drew Newman. While the season began a little rocky, the players were determined to turn it around, and took the initiative to make adjustments.

“They are the hardest-practicing team I have ever experienced,” Coach Michael Ruch said. “They voluntarily tripled their weekly practice, and the results are clear: Our Varsity squad finished with the best record in the Conference and the Conference Tournament Championship. The JV squad also finished the season with the best JV record in the Conference, only one loss.”

The team advances to the District Tournament on April 9. A District win would advance the team to a best of three games sectional meet before qualifying as one of the eight teams in the State Tournament.

This will end Coach Ruch’s 22-year Varsity Scholar Bowl coaching career, with a coaching record of 220-104. This includes five conference championships, eight district championships, five second place district tournaments, and placing 4th, 6th, and 8th in three trips to the State Tournament.

Congratulations to all on a fantastic season, and good luck at the District Tournament!
