SGHS Principal Dr. Boyd Recognized as 2023 Jim L. King Missouri High School Principal of the Year

We are incredibly excited to announce that Ste. Genevieve High School Principal Dr. John Boyd, Jr. has been recognized as the 2023 Jim L. King Missouri High School Principal of the Year! This award is bestowed by MoASSP, the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals.

Last week, Dr. Boyd was surprised with a schoolwide assembly, where MoASSP Executive Director Clark Mershon and Director of Programming and Development Chris Hoehne presented Dr. Boyd with his award. Student members of Dr. Boyd’s family, his Principal Advisory Group, high school teachers and district administrators all attended to share congratulations.

SGHS has a student enrollment of 510 students. This is Dr. Boyd’s second year serving as principal of SGHS. Prior to this position, he was the SGHS assistant principal for three years. In his fifth year as an administrator at the school, Dr. Boyd helped create a culture of kindness and respect, ensuring every student feels valued and supported. "Ste. Genevieve High School is a shining example of excellence in so many ways," Executive Director Mershon said.

“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Boyd for this accomplishment, and he is more than deserving of this recognition that centers on leadership and dedication to students and to our SG family,” Superintendent Dr. Julie Flieg said. “Dr. Boyd personifies unwavering commitment to our high school students, and strives to build trusting relationships through each interaction. He leads a building that has created a culture of kindness and respect so that our students feel seen and valued.”

MoASSP will officially present the award during the annual MoASSP Spring Conference at Lodge of Four Seasons, Lake Ozark, Missouri, on Monday, March 27, 2023.

Past MoASSP Presidents recently met to do a blind review of the eight regional winners. Dr. Boyd was awarded this recognition largely because he supports and implements innovative programs and initiatives, ensuring every student has the resources needed to succeed. Dr. Boyd operates from the core belief that he isn't simply a leader but a mentor and a friend.

For the last 33 years, MoASSP has sponsored the state principal of the year award. The award is named after Dr. Jim L. King. Dr. King was the 3rd and longest-serving Executive Director serving MoASSP for 16 years. Recognized as Southeast Missouri (SEMoASSP) Principal of the Year in May of 2022 by his peers, Dr. Boyd received his Doctorate of Education from Missouri Baptist University in 2015.

MoASSP sponsors the Jim L. King High School and Middle Level Principal of the Year programs. In 2017, the MoASSP Board of Directors renamed the award after Dr. Jim L. King. Dr. King was the third and the longest-serving Executive Director serving MoASSP for 16 years. MoASSP is proud to recognize administrators statewide for exceptional school leadership.

Dr. Boyd will be in the running to represent Missouri in the 2023-2024 National Association of Secondary School Principals' Principal of the Year program.
