GFWC Woman’s Club Recognizes SG R-II Students

The General Federal of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Woman’s Club of Ste. Genevieve honored Ste. Genevieve High School at its luncheon on Monday, May 6, 2024 at the VFW Post 2210.

The Woman’s Club bestowed students with writing awards, scholarships and opportunities to attend leadership conferences. The mission of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Ste. Genevieve is to strengthen its community and enhance the lives of others through volunteer service. The club helps to create change by supporting the arts, preserving historical and natural resources and advancing education through scholarships. The following students were presented with scholarships:

Helen Smith Scholarship: Taylor Armbruster

Young Woman’s Scholarship: Elaina Schemel

Other statewide scholarships, including the Missouri Leadership Seminar, Hugh O’Brien Youth (HOBY) Leadership program and the Sophomore Pilgrimage, are awarded to students for programs that promote good citizenship and leadership. The following students were presented with the opportunity to attend conferences:

Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership: Sophia Fritsch

Missouri Leadership Seminar: Charles Corbett

Sophomore Pilgrimage: Elijah Bennett

The annual Youth Writing Contest sponsored by the GFWC Woman’s Club of Ste. Genevieve narrowed down the many entries via local independent judges to first, second and third in two categories — short story and poetry. Those local winning entries were sent to the GFWC of Missouri State Conference competition. The following students were presented with awards through the Youth Writing Contest:

Poetry:

  • 1st Place State: Noah Willett, “The Big Game”

  • 2nd Place State: Raya Kreitler, “18”

  • 3rd Place State: Laurie Parker, “Ghost Boy”

  • 1st Place Local (Tie): Raya Kreitler, Noah Willett

  • 2nd Place Local (Tie): Keeley Palmer, Laurie Parker

  • 3rd Place Local (Tie): Rocksanna Hutson, Hannah Nelson

Short Story:

  • 1st Place State: Lilyan Largent, “A Teen’s Life”

  • 2nd Place State: Chloe Choate, “Mysterious Black Puzzle Box”

  • 3rd Place State: Matthew Burton, “The Old Blood”

  • 1st Place Local: Chloe Choate

  • 2nd Place Local (Tie): Matthew Burton

  • 3rd Place Local (Tie): Lilyan Largent

In addition, each year, the GFWC Woman’s Club of Ste. Genevieve provides a scholarship to one member of the Ste. Genevieve Middle School Band to attend the Mineral Area Fine Arts Academy Summer Band Camp. Congratulations to this year’s recipient, seventh grader Henry Hadel!
